Nonfiction November: The Top 5 Nonfiction Books I’ve Read This Year

Image
Well, it's that time again, folks. It's the one month of the year when I convince myself that I can definitely make up for the lack of nonfiction books I've read so far. Of the 56 books I've finished since January 1st, only 16 of them have been nonfiction. Suffice to say, I'm slacking. If you're in the same position as me and looking to branch out, I've got a list of the Top 5 nonfiction books I've read so far this year! I hope this helps you reach your goals for this month! #5: Burdened: Student Debt and the Making of an American Crisis by Ryann Liebenthal I read Burdened as an ARC, but it officially came out back in September. It chronicles the history of student loan debt and the beginning of the crisis we find ourselves entrenched in today. Liebenthal does a fabulous job of describing a system that is so broken and so harmful to the individuals who come into contact with it, striking a balance between journalistic integrity and an honest bias. Black Ops 6 Beta Review: A True Beta or A Sigma?

Image
I'm gonna place my unc card on the table to start this review: This is the 16th Call of Duty game I have ever played... (first one being WaW back in 2008 ....) But I have seen some blessed games and some horrific, god-awful, putrid games (Vanguard this is for you). I wanted to give BO6 a shot given its new mechanics, beta offerings, and all the fun little shenanigans that it can get involved in. Unlike other reviewers, I'd like to give this one a score upfront and then lay out my justifying points! Spenny's Score: 5/10 (OK) The Good: Let's start with a very big point: I love the omni-movement mechanic . I genuinely wish that this was added much sooner into COD (the technology has existed since 2015 with MGS V) because this would have made some games like Advanced Warfare or even BO3 feel much nicer to play and maneuver. The movement overall feels very light, responsive, and makes me genuinely feel like a true action hero without the clunkiness associated with most AAA ...

The Substance brings body horror to the big screen in complete homerun of a movie

Image
It's official...  The Substance  has overtaken  Longlegs  and  Challengers  as my favorite new movie this year. Anyone who has read a description of The Substance likely knows the route it will go. The commentary on women's beauty standards is certainly not subtle, but nothing about this movie is. It's about as in-your-face and graphic as movies go, and this was truly its greatest strength. What could have been done in a much more understated form pales in comparison to the entertainment provided in the obvious. Some reviewers felt that director Coralie Fargeat treated them as fools who needed the point to beat them over the head, but what is the use in subtlety with such a raw topic? Lately, I have felt that media has been coming for me at just the right time. Most blissfully, I have found the books that I'm reading so interwoven with my life and the other media I consume. Often, this provides me with a stronger respect for what I am reading/watching/hear...
